Praying

"You pray in your distress and in your need; would that you might also pray in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance."

Kahlil Gibran

Too often prayer is associated with times of difficulty and as a response to specific need. There are other times to pray than when we are I need, and additional forms of prayer than those which are petitions for help. Personal devotional prayer, similar to a poem, is a form of expressing ones love and appreciation for all-that-is. It neither asks for anything, nor does it complain and cry out for help. It is a practice of describing all that is holy, good and beautiful. Performed daily on a regular schedule, it is a most satisfying practice and serves as a infusion of energy and appreciation. William Law wrote “He who has learned to pray has learned the greatest secret of a holy and happy life.” Whatever you might have been praying for, consider today writing a poem about the Presence, or simply expressing what you love about the state of being alive, and call that your prayer for today.

Ecstasy

“I feel an indescribable ecstasy and delirium in melting, as it were, into the system of beings, in identifying myself with the whole of nature”

Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Over time, kindness develops into affection. Over time, affection deepens to love. And when love is given selflessly or unguardedly, over time a deeper love reveals itself, a love that has no agenda for personal gain or control. When one first becomes aware that he or she is loving in that way it is as if a rush of joy floods in to remind us of our natural born capacity to care about each other. Logan Pearsall Smith wrote that it is “through the cracks in our brains that ecstasy creeps in.” To me that means ecstasy cannot be planned or pursued with rational thoughts, goals and intentions. It is the natural byproduct of innocent loving. The ecstasy that comes from loving people is wonderful. The ecstasy that comes from loving the Presence is something deeply personal that each person must discover and experience for themselves.

Devotion

“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exists, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.”

Francis P. Church

“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.” Is the opening phrase of one of the most famous editorials written for The New York Sun answering a 8 year-old’s question Is there a Santa Clause. The editorial served then as it does today as a reminder that the real and enduring things in the world are those that we cannot necessarily see, but which we experience. Devotion is something that we cannot see, but experience the results of. It is a practice of ardently, often selflessly, giving time and attention to a person or a principle. If in your daily routine you give attention to a pet or a plant or a person, over time a natural love will arise for the object of your attention. If you apply the same practice of giving attention in your daily routine to the Presence, in whatever way that makes sense to you, over time a natural love will arise that is called devotion. And it does exist.

Dedication

Dedicate some of your life to others. Your dedication will not be a sacrifice. It will be an exhilarating experience because it is an intense effort applied toward a meaningful end.

Dr. Thomas Dooley

The human potential movement is a belief that an extraordinary potential lies largely untapped in most people and that social change can be brought about when individuals dedicate themselves to the cultivation of their individual potential. William Longwood wrote “Dreams and dedication are a powerful combination.” It is a reminder to be mindful about what I am dedicated to. Dedication solely to the personal self can result in powerful growth. Dedication a part of your life to others, assisting them to release their own potential, is a powerful contribution to society. Dedicating a part of your life to the Presence is a way of staying in touch with Reality.

Confessing

“A friend should be one in whose understanding and virtue we can equally confide, and whose opinion we can value at once for its justness and its sincerity.”

Robert Hall

When we own our experience of the Presence, it is a form of confession. In this way we declare or acknowledge that we are part of something larger and begin to come out of the shadows of secular life to join an ever growing company of likeminded people who share their love of life. Our confession of awe, wonder, belief and experience contributes to the beauty of the world. Every time we discover in ourselves and around us the warmth of feeling connected to all-that-is, taking time to note it and perhaps share it is a way of practicing being aware of the Presence. When last did you share with someone what is really important to you?

Wonder

“He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.”

Albert Einstein

To wonder means both to be filled with admiration, amazement and also to speculate or be curious about something. Pick someone you admire today to wonder about. Ask yourself what are the qualities you admire about this person and why these qualities are interesting to you. Take a moment then to list examples in your own life where you have exhibited these same qualities. Be sure to note how you feel when you both admire these qualities and when you are living them.

Awe

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.”

Albert Einstein

Awe is an attitude of mind that allows us to see things differently. It includes appreciation for detail, beauty and significance. It is the feeling of reverence or admiration that comes from witnessing something grand like a canyon, sublime like a dance, or powerful like a thunderstorm. You can practice awe by taking time to truly look at something and list all its qualities. Take something that is in your personal environment right now and really look at it and attempt to describe it to someone who is not present. How would you convey every detail of the object as well as the feelings you have when you touch it or see it?

Broadening horizons

“The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were.”

John Fitzgerald Kennedy

To practice being aware of the Presence of Divinity calls us to look beyond what is obvious, normal and routine. To do so try imagining what it might be like to be born into a different culture or in a different age. How would your beliefs differ from those you have today? What would your life be like if you were a different gender and what do you think would be the advantages and disadvantages? Try to imagine also how your current beliefs about the world may be limited. Is there some way you can broaden your horizons today?

Bliss

Do you think that you shall enter the Garden of Bliss without such trials as came to those who passed before you?”

Scott Reed

Bliss is supreme happiness; utter joy or contentment. In spiritual terms it is thought to accompany a complete realization of unity with Divinity. Daily spiritual practice, such as contemplation, meditation, prayer and journaling is thought to lead us to an experience of the Presence. The practice of journaling offers one of many possible devotional activities that you might use to practice feeling the Presence.

Believing

“Believing, is the brush that converts your dreams into a masterpiece of reality.”

Picasso

Believing means to have confidence in the truth, the existence, or the certainty of something, although without definite proof that one is right in doing so. Sometimes we believe in things that are not true and other times we cannot explain why we believe a certain thing. At the beginning of this journey it may be helpful for you to investigate what you believe. Make a list of the top beliefs you have about life and try to explore how it is you came to believe these thoughts.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus

We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O'Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus?

Thank God he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!

Service Reading April 12, 2009

Howard Thurman
The Good Deed
The Inward Journey, pg. 43-44

What happens when you do a good deed that meets some urgent need in the life of another person? Do you share with the person anything beyond the deed that is done, beyond the gift that is given?

Suppose the deed done and the gift given were the outward expression of an inward urge? Suppose that necessity to give were an inner necessity, generated by the discovery within yourself that your life is marked off from another life by the thinnest lines?

It is a world-shattering disclosure that the stream of life is a single stream, though it takes various forms. By prayer, by the deep inward gaze which opens the eyes of the soul to behold the presence of God, one feels the steady rhythm of life itself. The deep hunger to be understood is at last seen to be one and the same with the hunger to understand.

Out of such an experience a new perspective emerges. Consciously now, the mission of life becomes that of achieving in act what one has experienced in insight. One is ever on the hunt for openings in others through which this may be achieved. Human need in all of its dimensions is the swinging door into the innermost life of another. If a person is moved from within their own spirit to do the deed of ministering to the need of another, it follows that the good deed is a meeting place for the mingling of one life with another. What one has experienced in insight, they now achieve in the deed. What a difference giving makes now. It is no longer an offering merely of money or time or services, viewed as a sacrifice or a cause for merit, recognition, or glory. It is a simple sacrament, involving all of a person as their spirit moves through the swinging door of need into the very citadel of another’s spirit.

UNITY

It is well to remember that the enlightened in every age have taught that back of all things there is One Unseen Cause: In studying the teachings of the great thinkers we find that a common thread runs through all—the thread of Unity. There is no record of any deep thinker, of any age, who taught duality. One of the great teachings of Moses was, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is One Lord"; and the saying, "I AM that I AM," was old when Moses was yet unborn; for it had been inscribed over the temple entrances for generations. We may go back much farther than Moses and find the same teaching, for it crops out from the literatures and sayings of the wise of all ages. Jesus taught this when He said, "I and the Father are One," and in the saying, "The Father that dwelleth in me."

This teaching of Unity is the chief cornerstone of the Sacred Scriptures of the East as well as of our own Sacred Writings. It is to-day the mainspring of the teachings of the modern philosophies, such as Christian Science, Divine Science, The Unity Teachings, The New Thought Movement, The Occult Teachings, The Esoteric or Inner Teachings, and even of much that is taught under the name of Psychology. Without this basic teaching of Unity these movements would have but little to offer. Science has found nothing to contradict this teaching, and it never will, for the teaching is self-evident.

Happy Easter

"You have a Friend within you who is closer than your shadow. This Friend anticipates your every desire, knows your every need and governs your every act. This Friend is the God within you own soul, the animating Presence. This Friend within you is Infinite, and since it is Infinite, it is not limited by previous experiences which you may have had, by present conditions nor passing situations.
It has no inherited tendencies of evil, lack or limitation. It has never been caught in the mesh of circumstances. It is at all times, radiant, free and happy. It is your inner, absolute and perfect Self.
This Friend within you is different from all other persons, yet united with all. There is some part of you which reaches into the nature of others, thus irresistibly drawing them to you and drawing you to them, binding all together in one complete unity.
The Friend within you lives in a state of poise. It is above fear. It is beyond hurt. It is sufficient to Itself.
The Friend within you is continuously looking after your well-being. It always wishes you to be happy, to be well, to be radiant. Being the very fountain of your life, this Friend is a luminous Presences, evermore emerging from pure Spirit, evermore expanding your consciousness. It is the High Counselor, the Eternal Guide. It is your intellect, the essence of your understanding.
There can be no greater unity than exists between you and this inner Friend. It spreads a table before you in the wilderness of human thought. It’s cup of joy runs over. It laughs at disaster, triumphs over human failure, and mocks the grave. When this present experience shall be rolled up like a scroll, it will pass on to new and greater experiences. But today, this Friend is here. Trust It then, today, and you may trust if for all tomorrows yet to come.
Possibly it will be difficult for you to believe that there is such a Friend, but it is there at the very center of your being, directing your thought and causing you to triumph over every defeat…for it is an unconquerable hero. The one who keeps silent watch within you, lifts your consciousness to the realization that you are forever protected, forever safe, forever perfect."

HOMETOWN ORCHESTRA PLAYS TO CHEERING FANS AT WELLS

by Joan Lounsbery <http://www.classicalsonoma.org/users/?userid=56>
Sunday, April 05, 2009
The American Philharmonic Sonoma County, a community orchestra celebrating its 10th season, presented a "Quintessential Classics" program April 4 and 5 at the Wells Fargo Center. The event featured the concertmaster as conductor and its principal oboe as soloist.

Beginning with a lively reading of the overture to Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, conductor Evan Craves directed the whole program without a score. He has a terrific ability to introduce works verbally to the audience, showing himself to be both witty and enlightening - and the audience ate it up.

The program continued with Marcello's Concerto for Oboe and Strings. The work was introduced by the soloist, Daniel Celidore, who is also the orchestra's principal oboe. He played with elegance and lyric charm, supported by the solid continuo line of harpsichordist Phebe Craig and
cellist Kathy Vast. Celidore has been with the orchestra from the beginning, and the audience of 1,000 gave him a huge ovation.

The program moved into the Romantic era with a reading of Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn. Here one wished for a larger string section to achieve the lush romantic sound so characteristic of Brahms. In particular, the orchestra's lower strings are quite unbalanced in number, with nine cellos and only two basses. The work is a tour de force for the French horns, and the American Phil's horn section sounded great. The cello section also distinguished itself.

After intermission the orchestra returned for a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. The first movement (vivace) seemed to be without direction or intensity, and it simply did not match Craves' introductory description of the work as a "dance" symphony. However, in the allegretto second movement, conductor and orchestra hit their stride and by the end of the
35-minute masterpiece the orchestra was clicking on all cylinders and brought the work to a rousing finish. The woodwind section played masterfully, and ensemble and intonation were exemplary. At the Symphony's conclusion the audience jumped to its collective feet and literally hooted and hollered its way through several orchestra curtain calls.

Prior to the Beethoven, Artistic Director Gabriel Sakakeeny took center stage and presented an award to County Supervisor Shirlee Zane for her work with Sonoma County's senior citizens. It is rare and refreshing to see an orchestral organization publicly acknowledge an elected official.

American Phil concerts are free, and the organization depends on voluntary donations, perhaps explaining the large number of families in attendance. While the concert ran long at two and half hours (maybe there was one piece too many on the program?), nobody was seen leaving the theater, the audience staying until the very end to applaud its hometown community orchestra.
Beethoven would have loved it.

Oldie but Goodie

Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary...

Day 983 of my captivity...

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. &^%^##!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow - but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now . . . .

(thank you Michael Waldorf for reminding me of this one)

Prayer to help a friend

God is. That is the eternal reality. Ever flowing into expression. A perfect whole! The Universe… perfect, nothing missing. Whole, integrated, symmetrical. Complete, connected.

I am within the eternal reality that God is. Its greatness ever flowing through me, as it does through [Name]. [His/her] life reveals the reality that there is not a single thing missing. [His/her] mind effortlessly perceives the perfect symmetry of life. [His/her] heart is seamlessly connected to what is – and what is is, God is! There is no struggle in God! There is no struggle in [Name]. There is only the endless flow of reality moving through [his/her] mind and being, into experience. [His/her] thoughts move gently into right relationship with the world of affairs and [His/her] choices and feelings and actions reflect a deep and confident trust in the Universe.

This is an awareness to celebrate. There is gladness in knowing this.

There is natural joy in accepting the flow of life. And, there is a release into trust. Trust in the law of life.

And so it is.

Prayer to accept another person

There is only one life, expressing itself in endless diversity. Giving rise to countless individual forms and manifesting itself in newness all the time. This is God’s perfect variety – limitless and creative – never repeating itself, always new and always remaining intact…. God from God, to God and through God.

My life is God’s most unique creation – as is all life. Unique, precious, unparalleled. [Name]’s life is God’s most unique creation, as is all of life. Unique, precious, unparalleled. I honor [Name]’s life as God’s expression. I observe its beauty and newness with pleasure and awe – taking in the splendor of what God is doing through [him/her]. I covenant with this prayer to see [his/her] life as sacred, whole and unique. I covenant to trust God’s life in him to continue to express its diversity without ever taking away from the integrity of creation. Everything in its place, perfect integrity – this is the truth of [name]’s being and I accept it with awe and wonder and genuine warmth of feeling.

I celebrate this awareness in me, expressing my gratitude for the beauty of how all things work together in God. Having seen this reality in my mind’s eye, I release it into the law of Spirit… because it is not for me to do anything more other than to accept, accept, accept.

And so it has always been.

Prayer of Acceptance

There is only one life. That life is God’s Life. God’s life is eternal. It was never born, and there was never a time before it existed. It is ceaseless reality containing within itself all being, past, present and future.

I exist within God’s eternal life. My own living is a function of God’s life expressing itself. All the cycles of my life exist within God’s eternal being. None of my experiences are ever lost or wasted because they all exist eternally in God’s endless past-present-future.

I live my life with my focus on my business. I bring my attention to the care and nurturing of myself and through this focus I experience the love and acceptance that only I can give myself. This is my way of loving, accepting and appreciating god’s eternal life in me, as me and through me.

I love my life and I love the integrity of it. I celebrate this conscious awareness and I am truly grateful that it is my reality. I acknowledge that there is no part of met hat contradicts these statements. And, as my mind and heart are in alignment with the thoughts in this prayer, the spiritual laws that govern the universe harmonize my experience and actions to conform to what is true and real.

All is well. Forever and ever. Amen.
